Everyone loves a nice tall glass of Lemonade, especially on a hot summer day.  After reading the latest issue of Better Homes & Gardens, I decided make my own version of the Carrot Lemonade they featured this month.  An interesting fact: Michelle Obama graced this month’s cover and she happens to be the first public figure on the BHG cover since 1963.

Many of you have probably heard of the Master Cleanse and I’ve been receiving a lot of questions about it lately.

You all know where I stand; I don’t like diets/extreme cleanses, etc. The Master Cleanse is just that, it’s in no way a lifestyle or something that could be maintained long term. I’ve done juice cleanses up the wazoo. I love them, I think they are absolutely FANTASTIC! However, you have got to change your lifestyle and dietary habits AFTER the cleanse to maintain any of the long term benefits!! I can’t tell you how many people have walked into my office after losing a tremendous amount of weight on (insert diet name here) only to gain all of the weight back and more. It’s a vicious cycle that I can relate to because I’ve struggled through it myself.



You’ve probably heard the quote “insanity is doing the same things over and over again and expecting a different result”.  Well, doing a diet, cleanse, or detox and then reverting back to old unhealthy habits and expecting to maintain your weight loss is insanity! This may seem harsh but think logically, you simply can’t expect to get a different result. Those habits were what caused you to gain weight in the first place!! I know, for sure, 100%, absolutely NO QUESTION, that if I veer off and start eating out several nights a week, drinking, and eating processed foods again, I will absolutely gain weight …and I will be a total bee-otch because those foods not only make me gain weight but they also make me feel like a total crazy person!

In order to maintain long term health and long term weight loss remember that “Slow and Steady” wins the race. It’s about doing the same healthy things and eating the same healthy foods over and over again. NOT going in and out of diets and the vicious cycle of gaining and losing weight. I spent YEARS yo-yoing all over the freaking place. One minute you feel great, the next minute you want to hide in your room and never see anyone again…talk about insanity!!




Ahh, finally finding “the perfect lifestyle”, talk about liberation!! I LOVE my lifestyle!! I adore it! I love the way my foods taste, the way I feel after a meal, and I love sharing my recipes with clients and friends and showing them how delicious healthy foods can be!! I love the way real food makes me look, I love not having to stress or restrict and most of all, I love the calm sense of peace that comes from real nourishment.

Just know that with health comes weight loss. A truly healthy body will never hold onto excess weight (see WASTE = WEIGHT a MUST read article!).  Focus on HEALTH. If you don’t have your health, you have nothing. I’ve talked about suffering with depression and other issues before. Food is such a major player in a lot of little things we don’t even think about. Real health (physical & emotional) comes from REAL food.

Here’s a REAL FOOD recipe that you and everyone you know will be sure to love!! Hey, if it’s good enough for the First Lady, it’s good enough for me 😉



Carrot Lemonade

You’ll need:

  • 1 qt freshly juiced carrots, about 3lbs
  • 6 medium lemons, juiced
  • 2-3 cups water
  • stevia to taste
  • 1 inch knob of ginger, juiced (optional)

This recipe will make about half a gallon. Feel free to cut in half or double to adjust your serving size.

Simply juice the carrots, lemon, and ginger (ginger is optional but I love the extra kick it gives!) and add water and stevia to taste. A note on stevia: I always order my stevia through they have the absolute best prices!! This carrot lemonade is delicious and a really gorgeous, fun way to get some added nutrition! Kids LOVE this recipe! It’s bright color makes it perfect for parties and entertaining too.

If you’re not totally convinced, just look at the long list of health benefits:

  • Did you know that eight ounces of carrot juice can contain as much as 800% of your daily recommended dosage of vitamin A. Vitamin A is essential and necessary for tissue growth, especially within the bones. Vitamin A is also very important in maintaining good vision. The old myth that eating carrots will help you see better is true, as vitamin A deficiencies can lead to vision problems such as night blindness. Spinach is also a very rich source of Vitamin A. A little spinach juiced with a few carrots will deliver a vitamin A mega beverage. Vitamin A is also very crucial for expectant mothers and the unborn fetus.
  • Carrot juice is also an excellent source of vitamin C. An eight ounce glass of pure carrot juice can provide your body with up to 35% of your daily recommended dosage of vitamin C. Vitamin C has a wide variety of uses throughout our entire body, such as collagen production of the mucous membranes, skin, bones, and teeth. Vitamin C is also a very crucial antioxidant.
  • Carrot juice is an excellent drinkable source of potassium. Potassium is very important in helping to maintain a healthy electrolyte balance and fluid level in the cells of your body. It’s also necessary in muscle movement, such as contraction, as well as neurotransmission. Potassium deficiencies are very bad for your body, with such effects as Hypokalemia, acne, muscle spasms, dry skin, and elevated cholesterol levels. Carrots juiced with celery or turnips can provide your body with a large intake level of potassium. An eight ounce glass of pure carrot juice will usually provide up to 10% of the daily recommended intake level of potassium.
  • Pure carrot juice is a very low calorie juice drink. Eight fluid ounces of the beverage yields usually no more then 80 calories. Carrot juice is an excellent nutritional supplement for dieters, providing you with a rich supply of essential vitamins and minerals, without being accompanied by all of the calories that a health shake might give you.
  • Pure carrot juice in an eight ounce serving can provide up to 6% percent of your daily recommended intake level of calcium. It is very important to receive a healthy level of calcium in your daily diet. Bones and teeth are dependent on calcium for growth and formation, especially the skeletal structure and development of children. (source:

    It’s very true that the secret to keeping the weight off after doing a diet is that – there is no secret! Maintaining a healthy diet and not reverting back to old habits is very important. Here’s a good website I’ve found on the lemonade diet.

    Thank you for the great post. I will make this juice tomorrow. I’m new to juicing and this is the first recipe I’m going to try. I enjoyed reading how yo-yo dieting is rediculous and I completely agree. I watch so many of my friends suffer with it and it’s hard to watch knowing some simple changes could make such a big impact on their health – whole foods, no more diets. Baby steps 🙂

    instead of adding stevia and water, add a few apples for sweetness. This is one of my favorite juice drinks! For even more feel-good vitamins and an even brighter color, add a beet or two! yum yum! I’m stopping for carrots on my way home 🙂

    Would this be a good Vitamix recipe? I’m investing in the machine because of it’s variety of uses and wonder if it would break down the carrot effectively. I really want to be more healthy but don’t have a lot of money to invest in equipment so I need a good multi-tasking machine.

      This is a great recipe for a Vitamix! Unless you want a thick, smoothie-like consistency I would strain the blended mixture through a nut milk or 1 gallon paint straining bag which you can find at Lowe’s or Home Depot for a couple of dollars. This will separate the pulp from the juice very nicely 🙂

    I am new to juicing! Trying to change things around and create a healthier eating environment in our house. I have an extremely picky husband and our oldest daughter has unfortunately followed in his footsteps. One of the few things she will consume are smoothies and I’m going to try to start encorporating more fruits and veg in those for her ASAP. I love your juice and smoothie recipes! I just got my first juicer and am interested in making juicing an every day thing in our house! Is there a book you recommend that has good info on juicing, more recipes, and the benefits of the fruits and veg’s used? Your site has been great thank you!

    I just found your blog through Pinterest. I am interested in Juice Feasting. Can I just say this may change my life. I have fibromyalgia and all the side ailments that go with it. I have just started juicing doing green smoothies with fruit and berries. Time to step it up a notch. My question for you is: Can I do all the same juicing you are doing with my Blendtec Blender. It liquefies anything. Is there a benefit to actually using a juicer over a blender that will liquefy? Thank you for sharing your knowledge through your blog. You will be blessed!

    why do we not want to drink the pulp? Isn’t that fiber? I really want to understand. I have a blendtec and have been drinking green drinks for a year now. I am sad but happy discovering I should have bought a brevill and that I can get better results. I am so excited to read your website and make the change.

      Including the juice would make it thick like a smoothie. If you want to leave the pulp, that’s ok but I think the texture might be a little rough!

    Hi Linda!

    First off I’d really like to thank you for the inspirational recipes and info you share with all of us!
    I’ve been juicing and having smoothies for a couple years now. I’m a little comfused with different info I’ve been reading. Some people say that juices can be too high in sugar. Is it safe to drink juices like the carrot lemonade throughout the day?
    Also, do you have any examples of what a regular day of juice feasting for you looks like?

      Hi Jennifer,

      I would always try to incorporate greens into my juices. Most of the time my juices are predominantly green! The carrot lemonade is high in sugar so I would do that with less frequency and more as a “treat”.

        LInda – Can you explain why the carrot lemonaide is high in sugar ? I don’t see any ingredient that would contain high sugar levels

          Carrot juice is higher in sugar than regular vegetable juice, almost as high as sweet fruits. Once the fiber is removed through the juicing process, the amount of sugar is actually quite high so I try not to add any additional sugar to the recipe.

    What is the best way to store the juice in the refrigerator ? Do you recommend Mason jars that are available on ? I have a Jack LaLanne’s power juicer Express.

      You can store it in a mason jar with the lid on tight OR you can also freeze it if you need to store it longer!

    Do you have any idea of the shelf life of this? I’m planning to do a 60-day juice only regimen, but ideally I’ll juice at night for the next day.

      It should be consumed within 24hrs and kept in the fridge. Ideally you’ll want to drink juice immediately after making it as it starts to oxidize immediately and lose nutrients.
