Ingredients

By now you guys all know how much I LOVE my superfood smoothies!! They are nutritious, great for weight loss, super tasty, fast & easy to make, and absolutely DELICIOUS!!

Adding superfoods to your smoothies is a great way to get a BOOST in nutrition. I just went to California for a girls weekend where we indulged in lots of not-so-healthy foods and a ridiculous amount of cocktails…hey, it happens! Plus it was a blast so it’s totally worth it!! I don’t stress about falling off the wagon and not being perfect. Instead when I get back home, I just get right back on track and load up on greens and superfood smoothies! Today’s smoothie reminds me of Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups which makes getting back on track so much easier! It has extra nutrition from superfoods like Cacao PowderCocoCepsChia Seeds, and Probiotics. Just take a look at all the amazing health benefits of each of these ingredients, it’s kind of unbelievable!

Cacao Powder contains many important vitamins and minerals including:

  • Magnesium, and other essential minerals including calcium, sulfur, zinc, iron, copper, potassium, and manganese

Chia Seeds are one of my favorite superfoods! Just look at all these health benefits:

  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids – Chia seeds are rich in polyunsaturated fats, especially omega-3 fatty acids. Chia seeds’ lipid profile is composed of 60 percent omega-3s, making them one of the richest plant-based sources of these fatty acids — specifically, of alpha-linolenic acid, or ALA. The omega-3s in chia seeds can help reduce inflammation, enhance cognitive performance and reduce high cholesterol.
  • Fiber – Fiber is associated with reducing inflammation, lowering cholesterol and regulating bowel function. Chia seeds are an excellent source of fiber, with a whopping 10 grams in only 2 tablespoons. That is one-third of the daily recommended intake of fiber per day.
  • Antioxidants – Chia seeds are rich in antioxidants that help protect the body from free radicals, aging and cancer. The high antioxidant profile also helps them have a long shelf life. They last almost two years without refrigeration.
  • Minerals – Two tablespoons of chia seeds contain 18 percent of the DRI for calcium, 35 percent for phosphorus, 24 percent for magnesium and about 50 percent for manganese. These nutrients help you prevent hypertension and maintain a healthy weight, and are important for energy metabolism and a part of DNA synthesis.
  • Satiety – Satiety is the feeling of being full and satisfied, which helps lower food cravings between meals. The combination of protein, fiber and the gelling action of chia seeds when mixed with liquids all contribute to their satiating effects.
  • Gluten-Free – Chia seeds contain no gluten or grains. Therefore, all of the nutritional benefits of chia seeds can be obtained on a gluten-free diet.
  • Easily absorbed – unlike flaxseeds, which are also high in omega-3 fatty acids, fiber and minerals, chia seeds do not need to be ground in order to obtain their nutrient benefits.
  • Cholesterol – A study published in the “British Journal of Nutrition” showed that chia seeds as a dietary fat source can lower triglycerides and cholesterol levels while increasing HDL or “good” cholesterol. The study also found that when substituting chia seeds for other fat sources, such as corn oil, the ALA was able to prevent high triglyceride levels and reduce central obesity.
  • Blood Sugar Regulation – Chia seeds can play an important role in regulating insulin levels. They can reduce insulin resistance and decrease abnormally high levels of insulin in the blood. (source)

Here is my most recent creation which literally tastes like a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup plus it’s loaded with unbelievable health benefits!! I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

You’ll need:

Time Saver: When I go to the grocery store I always buy 3-4 bunches of bananas at a time. As they start to get spotty and brown I peel them FIRST, then put them in a plastic bag and into the freezer. Back to school and back on track – Summer is winding down and a common theme with my clients is the feeling that they (and their families) need to “get back on track” after vacations and summer indulgences. My go-to recommendation is always the Green Smoothie, it’s kind of magical! Adults and kids both love it because it tastes AMAZING! Plus it’s filling enough to have as a light meal or snack. I once heard someone say, “if you don’t have time to eat, then you need to drink your meals“! Busy moms, athletes, kids, young professionals, and everyone in between can benefit from the GS!

What I love most about the GS is that it tastes so good, you forget it is loaded with nutrition. Just look at that bright green color! It might look strange at first but it is sweet and filling – even the kids love it!! You can call it the “Monster Smoothie”, “Hulk Shake”, “Shrek Smoothie” or some other fun name but believe me, kids go crazy for it! And it’s a great way to sneak in some powerful green nutrition into their diet. Especially with the school year starting, it’s SO IMPORTANT for our kiddos to get proper nutrition. Studies have shown over and over again that kids with better nutrition are better behaved and do better academically in school!

The Green Smoothie is super fast to make, it takes less than 5 minutes to make, blend, and clean up so no excuses, even if you’re running late!!

Pineapple Mango Mint

This recipe is super simple. All you need is a blender and the following ingredients:

  • 1 banana
  • 1/2 cup frozen pineapple
  • 1/2 cup frozen mango
  • a couple handfuls of spinach
  • 1 sprig of fresh mint (optional but makes a lovely variation)
  • water

Add just enough water to blend and enjoy, that’s it! Forget the dehydrating morning latte and get the glow with a Green Smoothie instead.

I’ve have clients who have literally changed their lives just by adding Green Smoothies into their routine. Great for weight loss, digestive health, supporting the immune system, and as a healthy and filling snack. After a couple of weeks you’ll have that ‘Glow’ – glowing skin, hair, nails, even eyes get brighter! Who doesn’t want that?!

Try any combo you like, all you need is a base of bananas, fruit of your choice and a couple handfuls of your favorite green (I like spinach as it has a really mild flavor that blends well). The basic recipe is fruit + greens + water.

Green Smoothie Tips & Tricks:

  • People always ask me what kind of blender I use and recommend. I make all my smoothies using a VitaMix which is a super awesome, state of the art, amazing, must have high speed blender. They are the ONLY blender that will get you the creamy consistency that you desire.  I love, love, LOVE my VitaMix and highly recommend investing in one if you are ready to make serious changes to your diet. I have had mine for almost 5 years and use it daily! If you’re not ready to drop that kind of cash, Hamilton Beach makes some great budget friendly blenders that you can get at your local Walmart or Target.
  • If you can not do bananas for any reason simply leave it out or substitute any other fruit you like. If you want a creamier consistency, you can substitute avocado or coconut meat instead of the banana.
  • If you cannot have the fruits listed, simply use any fruits that you CAN have. Same goes for the spinach. If you can’t use spinach, you can substitute any green leafy vegetable of your choice; swiss chard, kale, romaine, arugula, etc. The basic recipe is fruit + greens + water.
  • If you want the smoothie to be BRIGHT green as pictured, use only lighter colored fruits like pineapple, mango, peaches, green grapes, kiwi, green apples, yellow raspberries, pear, oranges, etc. If you add darker fruits like strawberries, cherries, red grapes, blueberries etc your smoothie will turn out to be more of a brown color – still DELICIOUS, just not as vibrantly green as in the pictures above.
  • Can I add yogurt or milk to my green smoothie? I am a firm believer in proper food combining. Dairy does not combine well with fruit and will cause fermentation, yeast, digestive issues, and will not aid in weight loss. That’s the reason I don’t recommend adding yogurt or any other dairy products (the only exception to this rule is kefir). Believe me, you will be satisfied with the smoothies, the recipe will make about a quart which will definitely fill you up!!
  • If you have blood sugar issues, use avocado and/or coconut meat/flakes and semi-sweet fruits like grapefruit, berries, green apples, and add stevia to taste. I strongly recommend purchasing through iherb.com.   • If you are constantly rushing out the door in the morning, you can make your smoothies the night before. They will last in the fridge for up to 2 days.
  • If you are REALLY pressed for time, you can make all your green smoothies for the week then freeze them. Each night remove one and let thaw on the counter or in the fridge so that the next morning it’s ready to go.
  • This recipe will make approximately 32 ounces. You can have as little or as much as you need to feel full!
  • A lot of people ask how many calories are in the Green Smoothie. I don’t EVER worry about calories! When you’re eating whole foods, especially raw unprocessed fruits and vegetables, you don’t have to!! That’s what is SO LIBERATING about it!! If you must know, you can use an online calculator like fitday.com but know that those details don’t matter when you’re eating whole foods! Green Smoothie for Glowing Skin!

Many of you already know that Green Smoothies are my go-to for breakfast, snacks, and/or pre and post workout fuel. They are easy to make, taste delicious, and are packed with nutrition!! Lately, I’ve been experimenting with adding kefir to my smoothies. Kefir is SO GOOD for the skin!

Kefir is a low-fat cultured dairy food rich in calcium and protein. It is somewhat similar to yogurt in taste and appearance, however, kefir is made with 12 different live & active cultures, and it’s cultured for 14 hours, giving it a higher probiotic count than yogurt and an effervescent, tangy flavor. There are up to 10 billion units per serving!

When these friendly bacteria proliferate, we experience:

  • healthy skin
  • weight loss
  • increased immune response
  • better digestion and healthy bowel movements

This is because these little sentient beings are constantly producing enzymes, B vitamins, and other nutrients that support a healthy internal environment. Internally, your “gut” or intestinal system is your line of defense in keeping the skin healthy and vibrant, and your immune system strong.  Skin issues are often related to what is going on inside our gut.  The ratio to healthy and unhealthy bacteria in the intestine is said to be best at 80/20.  When this is in check, rest assured the body will thrive. (source) Adding 1 cup of kefir to your daily smoothies will work wonders to restore the healthy bacteria in the get and your skin will be glowing as a result!

In 2003 a study of over 100 children from families with a history of eczema also found a benefit from probiotic supplementation, and just last year a study noted that daily supplements of probiotic foods may reduce the risk of eczema in children by 58 percent. Indeed, a study published in 2008 found that children with only a limited variety of bacteria in their intestines one week after birth are more likely to develop eczema by the age of 18 months. It’s thought that giving an infant probiotics (good bacteria) helps to stave off eczema and other allergic diseases by beneficially altering the early colonization of bacteria in their gut, which may help the child’s immune system to develop and mature. It may be through a similar mechanism that probiotics help other skin conditions as well. (source)

This smoothie not only tastes really, REALLY good but it’s also packed with serious superfood nutrition. You won’t believe all the benefits. Let’s take a look at each ingredient individually:

Bananas:

  • Healthy Kidney Function: About 190,000 cases of kidney cancer are diagnosed each year. Research published in the International Journal of Cancer has shown that daily consumption of whole fruits and vegetables, especially bananas, is highly protective to kidney health. The results show that, over a long time frame (13.4 years), women eating more than 2.5 servings of fruits and vegetable per day cut their risk of kidney cancer by 40%. Among the fruits, bananas were especially protective. Women eating bananas four to six times a week halved their risk of developing the disease compared to those who did not eat this fruit. The conclusion of the study is that frequent consumption of fruits and vegetables, especially bananas, cabbage and root vegetables, may reduce risk of kidney cancer. This is because bananas and many root vegetables contain especially high amounts of antioxidant phenolic compounds, while cabbage is rich in sulfur, necessary for effective detoxification of potential carcinogens.
