What I Ate Wednesday

As usual I started the morning with my new obsession: Vanilla Chameleon Cold Brew coffee. I added stevia and took my 80 billion probiotic (use code WAG472 to get $5-10 off first purchase).  I’ve also started a modified candida protocol to get my body back in line after vacation. I’ve also been taking oregano oil and a product called Candida Support as well. If you’d like me to talk more about these products and why I use them, please leave me a comment!

ripe mango

I went for a sweaty morning walk with the pups and then I had a really yummy sweet Mango mid morning. I got these at Costco and they have all been amazing and perfectly ripe!!

scrambled eggs with arugula, red onion, grape tomatoes and garlic

I had a big brunch of 3 scrambled eggs with arugula, red onion, grape tomatoes and garlic. I served it with sliced avocado, a slice of toasted Ezekiel English muffin, doused it in Cholula hot sauce, and a sprinkle of sea salt and pepper. A really yummy and hearty late breakfast/lunch!

zucchini and hummus

Then I snacked on zucchini and hummus.

The Metabolism Master juice recipe

As well as 16oz of the Metabolism Master.

Easy Vegetable Soup

I didn’t eat a lot during the day since it’s been SO HOT (103 degrees) here in Austin so I was starving come dinner time!! For dinner I had a 2 GIANT bowls of this vegetable soup at room temperature with an entire large avocado sliced in!

After dinner I had about 6 squares of dark chocolate with peppermint, so yummy! All day I sipped on Topo Chico with lemon and stevia to help cleanse the liver & kidneys, stay cool, and hydrated! I’m looking back at all my “What I Ate Wednesday” posts and my meals seem so repetitive and boring! I hope you are still getting some inspiration from them!

I hope everyone is having a wonderful week!!

You can see all of my “What I Ate Wednesday” posts here. Enjoy!

Chocolate Peanut Butter Weight Loss Smoothie Recipe

This smoothie tastes like a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup but super healthy and loaded with unbelievable health benefits!! via Linda Wagner

By now you guys all know how much I LOVE my superfood smoothies!! They are nutritious, great for weight loss, super tasty, fast & easy to make, and absolutely DELICIOUS!!

Adding superfoods to your smoothies is a great way to get a BOOST in nutrition. I just went to California for a girls weekend where we indulged in lots of not-so-healthy foods and a ridiculous amount of cocktails…hey, it happens! Plus it was a blast so it’s totally worth it!! I don’t stress about falling off the wagon and not being perfect. Instead when I get back home, I just get right back on track and load up on greens and superfood smoothies! Today’s smoothie reminds me of Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups which makes getting back on track so much easier! It has extra nutrition from superfoods like Cacao PowderCocoCepsChia Seeds, and Probiotics. Just take a look at all the amazing health benefits of each of these ingredients, it’s kind of unbelievable!

Cacao Powder contains many important vitamins and minerals including:

  • Magnesium, and other essential minerals including calcium, sulfur, zinc, iron, copper, potassium, and manganese
  • Polyphenols called flavonoids, with antioxidant properties
  • Vitamins: B1, B2, B3, B5, B9, E
  • Essential heart-healthy fat: oleic acid a monounsaturated fat
  • Protein
  • Fiber

These nutrients found in raw chocolate have been linked to a number of health benefits:

  • Raw chocolate can lower blood pressure & improve circulation – Flavanols, theobromine, and other components found in cacao may lower blood pressure and enhance circulation by promoting dilation, strength, and health of blood vessels
  • Raw chocolate can promote cardiovascular function & health – The antioxidant power of flavonoids and essential minerals and vitamins found in cacao can support healthy heart functioning by lowering blood pressure, improving blood flow, lowering LDL cholesterol, and reducing plaque buildup on artery walls.
  • Raw chocolate Can Neutralize free radicals – High levels of antioxidants protect the body from a buildup of free radicals from sun exposure, pollution, cigarette smoking, etc., which may damage healthy body tissue giving rise to cancer and cardiovascular disease.
  • Raw Chocolate can improve digestion – A sufficient amount of fiber delivered with each serving of cacao supports digestion while cacao stimulates the body’s production of digestive enzymes.
  • Raw chocolate can enhance physical and mental well-being – There are many components of cacao including alkaloids, proteins, beta-carotene, leucine, linoleic, lipase, lysine, and theobromine, that all work together to improve physical and mental health.  For example, theombromine helps to stimulate the central nervous system, relax smooth muscles, and dilate blood vessels, giving the body a boost of energy;  “bliss” chemicals found in cacao help to increase circulation and availability of serotonin and other neurotransmitters in brain, improving mood and combating depression. Cococeps contains Micronized Reishi which is probably the most well-known tonic mushroom in the world. It is known in China by the name Ling Zhi, and revered throughout East Asia as the “Mushroom of Longevity.” Cococeps also contains Micronized Cordyceps, a potent tonic used for centuries in Tibetan and Chinese cultures to promote energy and longevity.

From Cordyceps: The best medicine in the worldCordyceps can:

  • Restore health during convalescence and treat deficiency syndrome caused by overstrain.
  • Strengthen the immune system to help the body resist and withstand attacks from virus and bacteria.
  • Prevent tumor activity.
  • Regulates sleep problems and improves sleep quality.
  • Improves blood circulation and regulates blood pressure.
  • Reduce triglycerides and cholesterol levels, thus promoting cardiovascular heath.
  • Improve sexual function in men and also combats infertality in women.
  • Alleviates arrhythmias, thus protects the heart.
  • Resists allergy.
  • Increases vitality and stamina. It is especially useful in alleviating fatigue, enhancing physical endurance, and mental acuity.
  • Controls liver, lung and kidney dysfunction.
  • Resists respiratory problems.
  • Reduces pain
  • Neutralizes side effects caused by radiotherapy and chemotherapy.
  • Protects against free radical damage and oxidative stress, thus slows down the effect of aging.

This smoothie tastes like a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup but super healthy and loaded with unbelievable health benefits!! via Linda Wagner

Chia Seeds are one of my favorite superfoods! Just look at all these health benefits:

  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids – Chia seeds are rich in polyunsaturated fats, especially omega-3 fatty acids. Chia seeds’ lipid profile is composed of 60 percent omega-3s, making them one of the richest plant-based sources of these fatty acids — specifically, of alpha-linolenic acid, or ALA. The omega-3s in chia seeds can help reduce inflammation, enhance cognitive performance and reduce high cholesterol.
  • Fiber – Fiber is associated with reducing inflammation, lowering cholesterol and regulating bowel function. Chia seeds are an excellent source of fiber, with a whopping 10 grams in only 2 tablespoons. That is one-third of the daily recommended intake of fiber per day.
  • Antioxidants – Chia seeds are rich in antioxidants that help protect the body from free radicals, aging and cancer. The high antioxidant profile also helps them have a long shelf life. They last almost two years without refrigeration.
  • Minerals – Two tablespoons of chia seeds contain 18 percent of the DRI for calcium, 35 percent for phosphorus, 24 percent for magnesium and about 50 percent for manganese. These nutrients help you prevent hypertension and maintain a healthy weight, and are important for energy metabolism and a part of DNA synthesis.
  • Satiety – Satiety is the feeling of being full and satisfied, which helps lower food cravings between meals. The combination of protein, fiber and the gelling action of chia seeds when mixed with liquids all contribute to their satiating effects.
  • Gluten-Free – Chia seeds contain no gluten or grains. Therefore, all of the nutritional benefits of chia seeds can be obtained on a gluten-free diet.
  • Easily absorbed – unlike flaxseeds, which are also high in omega-3 fatty acids, fiber and minerals, chia seeds do not need to be ground in order to obtain their nutrient benefits.
  • Cholesterol – A study published in the “British Journal of Nutrition” showed that chia seeds as a dietary fat source can lower triglycerides and cholesterol levels while increasing HDL or “good” cholesterol. The study also found that when substituting chia seeds for other fat sources, such as corn oil, the ALA was able to prevent high triglyceride levels and reduce central obesity.
  • Blood Sugar Regulation – Chia seeds can play an important role in regulating insulin levels. They can reduce insulin resistance and decrease abnormally high levels of insulin in the blood. (source)

Probiotics are essential for proper health and weight loss. They support:

  • Enhanced immune system response
  • Alleviates negative affects of taking many types of antibiotics
  • Calms colon irritation following surgery
  • Helps to support healthy skin in youth
  • Increased ability to digest food
  • Therapeutic for upper respiratory complaints
  • Reduces lactose intolerance
  • Reduces incidence of yeast infections, vaginitis and candidiasis
  • Increases ability to assimilate the nutrients from food
  • Alleviates many common digestive disorders such as constipationdiarrhea and IBS
  • Acts as a remedy for bad breath (halitosis)
  • Increases ability to synthesize vitamin B
  • Increases ability to absorb calcium

This is a great article from Harvard Medical School on the importance of probiotics in the diet.

Kefir for Weight Loss

Kefir is delicious and great for weight loss!

Kefir has amazing health benefits, is delicious, and great for weight loss!

I’ve talked a little about fermented foods and probiotics on the blog before. Probiotic rich foods are SO important for our health. I strongly believe that they are the “missing link” in today’s common food practices. Probiotic rich foods (also called fermented foods) have been around for thousands of years and used in ancient cultures as a form of daily preventative health. Asian cultures used and still use things like kimchi and fermented bean pastes such as miso, German cultures have sauerkraut, and the Russians use kefir. Kefir is a low-fat cultured dairy food rich in calcium and protein. It is somewhat similar to yogurt in taste and appearance, however, kefir is made with 12 different live & active cultures, and it’s cultured for 14 hours, giving it a higher probiotic count than yogurt and an effervescent, tangy flavor. There are up to 10 billion units per serving!

I’ve recently experimented with incorporating a serving of kefir into my diet daily and have really loved the effect. Just some of the amazing health benefits of kefir are:

  • improved digestion
  • great for sluggish colons and constipation – especially after antibiotic use or travelling
  • increased energy
  • improved immune system function
  • clearer skin
  • recommended after use of antibiotics to restore beneficial bacteria in the colon
  • can improve or prevent yeast infections
  • excellent for children’s health and expectant mothers

My favorite brands of kefir are Green Valley Organics and The Greek Gods (pictured). Both can be found at your local health food store. I am a little partial to Green Valley Organics since I always strive to use organic animal products. You only need 1 cup per day to keep your system in tip top shape!

Kefir has amazing health benefits, is delicious, and great for weight loss! More info via Linda Wagner's blog

You can also make your own kefir, using kefir grains. I’ve got a kit at home but honestly have never used it. I just simply prefer the ease and convenience of store bought!

A note for all you moms out there, kids also love kefir. You can give it to them as an after school snack, add it to their daily smoothies, or serve as a light breakfast. It’s a great way to keep their immune systems strong during cold & flu season.

Can Stevia Help With Weight Loss?

Going Sugar Free

No Sugar: Is sugar making you fat? And the one simple thing you can do about it!!
source

We all know by now that too much sugar is not good for you. But why is it so bad? Here are 5 of the top reasons why sugar is a no-no:

  • Sugar suppresses the immune system. When you eat a big dose of sugar, like a bottle of Coke or a candy bar, you temporarily tamp down your immune system’s ability to respond to challenges. The effect lasts for several hours, so if you eat sweets several times a day, your immune system may be perpetually operating at a distinct disadvantage.
  • Sugar promotes inflammation. Inflammation, which is part of the immune response, is not always a bad thing. But eating sugar foods can fuel excessive, inappropriate inflammation that serves no useful purpose and actually promotes aging and disease. In my show on foods that fight inflammation, I pointed out that cutting back on sugary foods will help you avoid excess inflammation. If you want to slow down the aging process, do what you can to naturally enhance your body’s production of human growth hormone. Avoiding foods that are high in sugar is a good way to do that.
  • Sugar promotes glycation.   Sugar molecules treat your body like a singles bar. Once they get into your bloodstream, they start looking around for things to hook up with, like attractive protein and fat molecules. The hook-up is known as “glycation” and like most hook-ups, the results aren’t pretty. These glycated molecules act like drunken sailors, careening around your body, breaking things and peeing where they shouldn’t. They produce toxic compounds called advanced glycation end products, or, AGEs. That is perhaps the most poetically-just acronym in biology, because AGEs essentially throw the aging process into fast-forward. And much of the damage done by AGEs is irreversible. If that doesn’t motivate you to walk away from the M&Ms, I don’t know what would.
  • Sugar raises insulin levels. An influx of sugar into your body will have a fairly predictable result: Your blood sugar levels will zoom up.  Shortly after, your pancreas will release a bunch of insulin to help clear sugar from your blood into your cells. As blood sugar levels go down, insulin levels return to normal. But when you eat a lot of sugar, you’re constantly calling for insulin, and that can backfire in a couple of ways. Over time, it takes more and more insulin to get the job done. Eventually, your pancreas may just stop responding to the call. Congratulations, you’re now an insulin-dependent diabetic. And along the way, exposing your cells and organs to chronically high insulin levels accelerates the aging process. (source)
  • Sugar feeds Candida.  Candida’s function in the body is mainly to destroy all putrefied food matter in our digestive tract before any potentially harmful bacteria can have a feast on it, multiply, and then become threatening to our health…You may then become distended, constipated; allergies may begin to form, skin rashes and adult asthma symptoms may occur. What would once be considered normally benign yeast has literally morphed into an aggressive, destructive, fungal pathogen that can cause a variety of health problems from head to toe; often perplexing traditional doctors…Carbohydrates, even healthy complex carbs, break down into glucose (sugar) in the digestive tract, and sugar feeds Candida. All sugars MUST be avoided. (source)

If those 5 reasons aren’t enough to get you off sugar I don’t know what is! Candida especially, is a biggie. If you’ve got digestive issues, persistent allergies, skin issues, yeast infections, thrush, intense cravings, trouble focusing, an inability to lose weight, or extreme mood swings, candida is probably to blame and sugar is the main culprit.

The ONE simple thing you can do to begin transforming your health is to get off all sugars, especially artificial sweeteners. My go-to as a sugar replacement is NuNaturals Stevia.  NuNaturals stevia is a pure plant extract, not a chemical. It tastes great and comes in several different forms from liquidspowderflavored steviaquick dissolve tabs, to packets so it’s easy to take with you. I noticed a HUGE shift in my health when I switched to stevia and reduced my sugar intake. It also helped me clear my skin and lose those last few stubborn pounds that I couldn’t get rid of…yay for clear skin and weight loss!!

Here’s a yummy morning concoction I love to make that’s sugar free and better than coffee!!

What is the best Colon Cleansing Supplement?

Cleanse America Day 7

Day 7 started with my “go-to” juice, Green Lemonade. It’s loaded with greens and is sugar free so it’s great for those of you that are avoiding sugar or on any type of candida cleanse.

Green Lemonade

  • 4 cucumbers
  • 1 bunch kale
  • 1/2 bunch parsley
  • 2 small lemons
  • Stevia to taste

Run all ingredients through a juicer (I recommend Breville) and enjoy! (Makes 32-40oz). Glass straws make a fun addition!!

If you’re looking for stevia, try NuNaturals. It is the best tasting – most of the others taste like aspartame, yuck!! I buy mine through www.iherb.com, feel free to use my discount code WAG472 to get $5 OFF your first order + free shipping on orders of $20 or more!!

Day 7 was a very simple eating day. I’ve had such a busy week that I decided to get some much needed rest and took a nice long nap! For both lunch and dinner I had a giant Kale Salad with a glass of green lemonade. It was simple, delicious, and hit the spot!!

I’ve had a lot of questions about colon cleansing. I have been taking a colon cleansing supplement throughout the cleanse. My personal favorite is Oxy-Powder. I HIGHLY recommend it, it’s been a staple of mine for the last 6 years. It is intense, so be ready!! I suggest starting on a Friday so that you can get used to it over the weekend before heading back to work or other responsibilities.

Oxy-Powder is unlike other colon cleansers. It uses a proprietary process of creating oxides of magnesium. The 15 to 20 pounds of compacted fecal matter inside your colon is liquefied and flushed out. While psyllium and other fiber products simply scrape matter out through the center of a clogged colon, Oxy-Powder removes old, impacted fecal matter as it detoxifies and cleans the entire colon. By using Oxy-Powder you can melt away the compaction in the small intestine, large intestine, and colon, safe and effectively.”

The cleanse has been going great so far!! I love hearing about everyone’s experiences on the community! You guys ROCK!! We’re almost done!!
