5 Min Corn Chowder and 7 Benefits of Raw Food

I’ve absolutely LOVING my 5 Min blended soups. They have become quite the staple since the end of my juice feast. They are 1) delicious, 2) blending using the VitaMix keeps them RAW so they are super nutritious, and 3) so FAST and EASY to make!! Seriously, even a 4 year old could make it!!

So what’s the deal with raw foods anyway? What exactly is raw food??

A raw food diet consists of unprocessed raw vegan foods that have not been heated above 115 degrees Fahrenheit (46 degrees Celsius) – which basically just means raw, uncooked fruit and vegetables in their natural state. When fruits and vegetables are cooked at high temperatures they lose some of their enzymes and nutritional value, whereas uncooked foods provide living enzymes and proper nutrition.

7 Benefits of Raw Foods

Raw food has benefits for everyone.  Eating lots of raw food can make a big difference in your energy, health, weight, mood, and quality of life.  Let’s look at 7 raw food benefits that you can experience by eating more raw and living foods.

Raw Food Benefit #1:  More Energy

One of the biggest raw food benefits is having more energy and feeling younger.  Raw food contains simple sugars, enzymes, nutrients, and minerals that our bodies need in an easily digestible form.  Since less energy is needed for digestion, you have more energy available for other tasks—such as working, playing, exercise, or anything else you want to do.  Which brings us to raw food benefit number two…

Raw Food Benefit #2:  Easier & Faster Digestion

Raw foods contain living enzymes that help your body digest food quickly and easily.  These enzymes are destroyed when food is cooked above 118 degrees Fahrenheit.  When you eat a big cooked meal, a large amount of energy is required to digest the meal.  This explains why you feel tired and sleepy after a big Thanksgiving dinner (or any large cooked-food meal). With raw food, digestion & elimination are quick and easy.

Raw Food Benefit #3: Lots of Fiber and Naturally Detoxes Your Body

Raw food assists in naturally detoxing your body.  When you eat plenty of raw foods, you’re getting lots of fiber, allowing your body to release mucus, toxins, and accumulated waste. When you eat clean food (fresh fruits and veggies), your body can focus on detoxing—instead of having to focus on digesting unhealthy, artificially processed, dead, and packaged foods. Good health requires good elimination—and fiber assists in that process.

Raw Food Benefit #4: Rapid Weight Loss

Another fantastic benefit is weight loss.  When you eat a raw food diet, you’ll probably lose weight.  Why? Because raw food is pure – it doesn’t contain junk food, harmful additives, hydrogenated oils, or lots of empty calories. Raw food provides maximum nutrition for minimum calories. Plus, fruits and veggies are naturally low in fat.

Raw Food Benefit #5:  More Nutritional Value than Cooked Foods

Foods cooked above 118F° will lose enzymes, nutrients, minerals and vitamins.  You can compare the energy that surrounds living food to the energy that surrounds cooked/dead food using Kirlian photography.  Living foods have more energy, which can be seen with Kirlian photography (more on Kirlian photography later).

Raw Food Benefit #6: Feeling More Rested & Possibly Needing Less Sleep

Among other raw food benefits, you might experience the need for less sleep.  When we eat large amounts of cooked food, the energy required for digestion taxes our bodies.  As a result, we need to sleep more to recover.  Many people report feeling more rested, and needing less sleep on a raw food diet.

Raw Food Benefit #7:  Anti-Aging Benefits

Raw food contains anti-oxidants, which play a big role in reducing the signs of aging. Researchers have concluded that free radical damage causes oxidation — and this is the central process of aging.

Free radicals are created as a side-effect of natural metabolism. They are also caused by drugs, environmental poisons and pollutants. The antioxidants and micronutrients in raw foods (fresh fruits & vegetables) reduce free radical damage, and help prevent the signs of aging. (source)


The moral of the story is to get MORE raw, unprocessed fruits and vegetables into your diet. You certainly don’t have become a raw foodist or eat 100% raw foods to reap the benefits. Try getting just 30-50% raw foods into your diet and you will instantly notice a HUGE difference!! That’s part of the reason people feel so AWESOME when they start the green smoothies, they don’t even realize they are eating raw foods!

This is my latest raw food creation and it was sooooo sooo good! Even better then expected! I always make my blended soups in a VitaMix which is a super awesome, state of the art, amazing, must have high speed blender. They are the ONLY blender that will get you the creamy consistency that you desire.  I love, love, LOVE my VitaMix and highly recommend investing in one if you are ready to make serious changes to your diet. I have had mine for almost 5 years and use it daily! I’ll be posting more VitaMix recipes so stay tuned!

5 Min Corn Chowder

You’ll need:

  • 1.5 cups organic corn (fresh or frozen; corn is not available now so I used frozen)
  • 1 red bell pepper
  • 1 large zucchini
  • 2 stalks celery (I will omit these next time)
  • 1 heaping tsp garlic powder
  • 1 heaping tsp onion powder
  • a dash of cayenne
  • a dash of nutmeg
  • sea salt and fresh cracked pepper to taste
  • 1/2 cup water
  • avocado, cherry tomatoes, a little extra corn and cilantro as garnish

In your Vitamix add corn, water, red bell pepper, zucchini, salt, pepper, nutmeg, cayenne, onion and garlic powder and blend on high until creamy. If you do not have a high speed blender like the VitaMix you may want to use a food processor instead, however, the consistency will be kind of chunky when using a food processor. Another option is to heat all ingredients in a pot on the stove, then use an immersion blender to blend. It’s not as fast and will no longer be raw but it’s still a super healthy option for those of you who don’t have a VitaMix 🙂

If you are using a VitaMix, simply blend until creamy. The longer you blend, the warmer your soup will be. Taste and adjust seasonings to your liking then garnish with fresh avocado slices, cherry tomatoes, corn kernels and cilantro!  Et voila, in less than 5 minuets your delicious soup is done!!

This soup was so yummy I am going to make it again tonight!! It is warm and creamy and is perfect on it’s own or with a large salad. Yummm!!

    This sounds amazing. I got a VitaMix for Christmas and have been making green smoothies everyday but I have yet to try making soup, can’t wait to try this recipe!

    I love making soups like this in my Vitamix too! So quick, easy and jammed pack full of nutrients. They are filling too. I LOVE LOVE LOVE my Vitamix too. Totally understand the adoration and bond to it. 🙂 They make raw food life a breeze. I’ll be preparing this lovely soup tomorrow for lunch – can’t wait! Looking forward to more of your 5 minute recipes soon. Baking up some sweet potatoes for dinner right now to be topped off with some goat cheese, an organic romaine lettuce salad with cucumbers, sprouts, hempseeds, sundried tomatoes, scallions and a homemade fig balsamic vinaigrette and a side of asparagus in coconut oil.     Where could I find a blended salad recipe? I just tried to make my own and it didn’t really turn out.. i think i added too much Kale and it’s bitter. Have any suggestions to fix it?

    Kristen Huls, it depends on what you want! VitaMix = smoothies, blended soups, nut milks, etc. Juicer = fresh fruit and veggie juice. BOTH are essential for me but it really does depend on the person and what they want!

    i used all of that except for the cilantro and parsley.. and i added carrots and cucumber. i did add avacoado and raw garlic. i bet the herbs would give it that flavor it needs! and i am going to add more water. thank you! 🙂

    Yeah, the cilantro and parsley are KEY!! They add so much flavor. I add literally a whole bunch of each when I make this soup! Just keep tweeking it and you will find the perfect combinations!! <3

    I am home with a nasty virus and just made this for lunch along w a couple raw asparagus pieces that I dipped in soup…yum! I left celery out and added some extra flavor and antioxidants w spices: turmeric powder, cloves, vietnamese cinnamon, Hungarian paprika and some cumin. It was delish!

      I’m omitting celery because it gave it a bit of a “bite”! The next time I made it was perfect but either way it was delicious! I’m just very picky when it comes to raw celery!

    I was wondering does the vitamix lose vitamins due to the heat when making your soup . i was thinking of getting a soup blender but i am worried about the heat damaging the enzymes, according to the Gerson therapy a lot of these juicers heat up your raw food and burn away the vitamins needed.thank you slow cooking is suppose to help keep vitamins and enzymes in and it seems to me the vitamix would burn them away, so i was wondering your take on this.thank you

      In my opinion, the Vitamix won’t heat it up enough to significantly change the nutritional value 🙂
