Kicking the Habit

This week’s Monday Motivation is going to be a little different. I’m going to give you a little challenge to get off the coffee!! If you’re anything like I used to be, you probably have a nasty caffeine addiction. I used to get my fix on anything I could find; 32oz cups of coffee, diet pills, energy pills, diet soda, you name it. I was always tired and always looking for some kind of “upper” to get me through the day. What I didn’t know, was that my caffiene addiction was actually a huge part of the problem and instead of helping, was actuallly making things worse.

From Frederic Patenaude Here’s an unknown fact:

Reliance on coffee to jump start your day is actually depleting your physical, emotional, and mental state.

According to Gayle Reichler, MS RD CDN, “Within five minutes after you drink your morning coffee, the caffeine begins to stimulate your central nervous system, triggering the release of stress hormones in your body, causing a stress (‘fight or flight’) response. Within the next hour or so, after the stress response dissipates, you will probably feel more tired and hungry.’ So what appears as “quick energy” is in reality a stress response triggered by the adrenal glands!

Blood sugar and weight gain:

“Caffeine can cause weight gain in a number of ways. The most significant way is the games it plays with blood sugar levels. After drinking coffee, the liver releases glycogen which raises blood sugar and to fix this problem the pancreas releases insulin. The catch is that insulin will store the excess sugar as fat.

Next, your blood sugar levels will drop and this is another reason for weight gain from caffeine because low blood sugar makes you very hungry. A lot of people think drinking coffee will help them lose weight because it wards off hunger for a few hours. Before quitting coffee, I used to drink a monster jug of iced coffee every morning, sometimes even twice a day, and not want to eat any food until late in the day. But sooner or later I was ravenous for food and the ensuing binges were neither healthy nor scale friendly.” (source)

 

Dangers that lurk in the cup:

The major ingredient in coffee, caffeine (or otherwise known as 1, 3, 7-trimethylxanthine) is the most widely consumed pharmacologically active substance in the world. Its major action is to stimulate the central nervous system. Excessive amounts in turn, increase the chance for negative side effects such as:

  • mood swings
  • depression
  • chronic fatigue
  • irritability
  • accelerated heart rate
  • panic attacks
  • dilated pupils
  • and high blood pressure (source)

Caffeine and Skin Health:

Tannin – Tannin is a chemical that is found in both coffee and tea. Commercially, tannin is used in tanneries when processing leather to make the leather soft and shiny, which is a good indicator that you shouldn’t be drinking it. Tannin blocks the pores of cells, preventing them from receiving nutrients provided by food. Other adverse aspects of tannin that make it great for leather treatment are its hydration-removal properties, which can cause your skin to become rough and brittle over time.

Liver Spots – These dark splotches are caused by a high level of toxicity and congestion in the liver. Your liver acts like a filter for your body, purifying your blood so your cells can receive oxygen and nutrients. Long-term coffee use may block your liver with toxins, preventing your liver from purifying your blood, according to Chet Day’s Health and Beyond Online. This impure blood then taints the cells in your body, including skin cells, which may result in the development of liver spots as you age.

Dehydration – In addition to the dehydrating effects that tannin has on your skin, the caffeine in coffee, when taken in high amounts, also acts as a diuretic, which further dehydrates your body. Diuretics cause you to urinate more frequently, which can dry out your body as well as your skin.

Acne - The connection between caffeine and acne has been a topic of hot debate over the years…some experts believe that while caffeine may not be a cause of acne, it could worsen the already existing condition. The toxic effects that coffee can have on your liver can also lead to acne, as the liver is unable to purify your blood, resulting in tainted skin cells.” (source)

Those are some pretty good reasons to give up coffee, don’t you think?! I know it’s hard, coffee is yummy! BUT I’ve got some exciting news for you! There are some AMAZING coffee substitutes that not only taste great but are actually GOOD FOR YOU!!

    What a coincidence! I gave up coffee this year. Plenty of green tea, yerba mate tea and fresh veggie juices are fueling a healthy, energetic state for me. I feel much clearer mentally, more connected to the voice of spirit!

    Great suggestion Linda! If people are intimidated by the abrupt transition from coffee to green drinks, a decaffeinated coffee blend over traditional caffeinated coffee, is a healthier option. Let’s not forget that coffee beans are still one of the BEST sources of cancer fighting antioxidants!

    This is more a question….what is you cannot use Stevia?? I have tried all those products that are for sweeteners and sugar substitutes and they all give me migraines. What do you suggest that I use?? Thank you for any help.

      Kim,
      You may actually fair well with the NuNaturals. The problem with a lot of other brands (aside from the taste) is that they also contain fillers. Those fillers can be quite toxic! Usually that is the problem…NuNaturals is super clean so you may want to give it a try. Otherwise you can use a natural sweetener like honey, coconut nectar or pure maple syrup.

    My problem is not coffee. Can’t stand the stuff! My love hate relationship is with coca cola which is also packed with caffeine. I really want 2 stop but man its hard!

    Well I’ll be darn. This week is my first week of getting off the coffee because my doctor told me to…plus I knew deep down it is not that good for you. But the funny thing is that I saw your green smoothie on Pinterest, tried it and loved it! It has become my go to nourishment in the mornings since I cannot handle a heavy breakfast in the morning.     Good morning Linda:

    Well what about chocolate, it is full of caffeine, you have a chocolate smoothie, is there caffeine in that, or does the makers of the companies that make the chocolate add the caffeine. I was never a heavy coffee drinker, I have at least one a day, but I haven’t had any since started drinking smoothies, but I do like a good cup of coffee here and there.

    Great post! Coffee contributes to adrenal fatigue through the excessive stress hormone production. The unfortunate thing is that most people who are lacking energy already have depleted adrenals and drinking any stimulants makes thing worse. Instead nourishing the body with smoothies, peaceful environment, and mild exercise would benefit the most until adrenal fully recover.
    I noticed that a lot of my clients drink coffee not just to get energy but to go to the bathroom. I guess caffeine irritates colon and stimulates elimination. Restoring proper elimination seems to be as much of an issue as finding a safe energy-giving foods.

    Also, another good coffee substitute to try is Teeccino. They have lots of different natural flavors, you can brew it just like coffee, and some are slightly naturally sweet. I started drinking it when I was pregnant. I got their sampler pack so I could try all of the different kinds.

      You’ll LOVE Cocoeps!! Coffee was really hard for me to give up, but I did it. I still occasionally enjoy a cappuccino from time to time. Delicious, but usually makes me feel pretty crappy afterward!

    Thanks, Linda! I’m on my way over to iherb.com now and order some of the Cococeps. I got off coffee over a year ago, but my husband still drinks it and would love to get him to try this. I do purchase organic coffee for him b/c of all the pesticides/herbicides on regular coffee, but still does the same thing overall. I drink hot lemon water every morning and then follow up with a tall glass of green juice and man am I flying on the green nutrients/chlorophyll/vitamins – who needs coffee when I can feel like this without the caffeine. Great article!

    Hi Linda! What are your thoughts about the CafeCeps? Or does the caffeine in the CafeCeps defeat the purpose of dropping coffee? I’m much more of a coffee drinker than a hot chocolate/mocha drinker, so I’m thinking I’d like the taste of the CafeCeps better, but just curious what your thoughts are. Thanks so much for all the great information!

    Does anyone else feel tired/sleepy right after drinking Cococeps? I’ve tried it twice now with some non-dairy coffee creamer and Stevia the first time and then with some hot chocolate the second time and I’ve been getting real sleepy right after drinking it. Coffee/caffeine doesn’t really have an affect on me either but it doesn’t make me feel sleepy right after. Any thoughts or comments?

      Hmm, never heard of anyone feeling sleepy….are you sure it’s the Cococeps? What kind of creamer are you using? Those things are usually PACKED with artificial sweeteners and preservatives… :( That could be the culprit.

        Hi Linda, thanks so much for your response! I use the same non-dairy creamer as I do with my coffee. But I’ll try the Cococeps without anything artificial next time. I’m not sure what’s going with me lately but the 2 times I drank Cococeps I was able to fall asleep within 30 mins. and I wasn’t really tired/sleepy until the Cococeps. But I’ll give it another try and see how things goes. Maybe I’ll try some with your DIY nut milk? Do you think the DIY milk is ok to heat? Thanks for introducing Cococeps!

    oh this would be so hard for me – i really enjoy my mid-morning cappucino, its the only one I have each day ( i do have tea at night though) the problem is i nurse it for about 2hrs so limits me drinking water instead. Is coffee really that bad?
    ive been drinking my Green smoothie daily now – love them! but still need my coffee…ughh so hard!

      Just take it day by day, increase your daily intake of greens and you’ll get there when your body is ready :)

    Just got this in the mail yesterday from iherb and it’s delish!! Tastes just like hot chocolate. I was sooo pleasantly surprised! I drank one cup this morning and then my green smoothie afterwards so no need for coffee!! I normally drink a small cup of coffee in the morning and didn’t miss it at all when I replaced it with the cococeps. Thanks so much, as always, for the awesome info!!!

    I just stopped coffee this week…been having the green smoothie every morning. Today I have a huge headache! How can I make it go away without taking asprin…or any other pain killer??? OUCH!

      Hi Janice,

      Sorry to hear about your headaches!! You are probably having a bit of caffeine withdraw. Try having a cup or 2 of caffeinated green tea, that should help!! Then tomorrow just one cup until you can wean off caffeine completely :)

      Dana, this is interesting- I’d never heard of the stuff. But one thing I noticed about the Bulletproof Coffee is that they are conscious of keeping the coffee free of mold. Most coffee has high levels of mold because of the way it’s processed, and you don’t want to be putting that stuff in your body (besides the fact that coffee is acidic, etc.). The Bulletproof Coffee could be a better option just because of the mold issue.
